September 28th- Weekly Blog
Hi Parents,
We hope everyone is having a great week; here are some weekly TMC reminders;
- Return fundraising books/packages by Monday October 1st
- Field Trip to Fort Calgary (October 15th)- still looking for volunteers
Math/Science:
During math this week we focused on data collection and graphing. On Tuesday we went outside every hour and measured the shadow lengths and sun height in the sky. Throughout the remainder of the week we compiled the collected data and calculated the mean, median and mode. This was a little challenging as it was our first time calculating data and these concepts are bridging on grade 6 math, but the students all tried hard to understand and participate. Students had the choice to work through these calculations in a small student lead group or in the larger teacher lead group. Yesterday we made our graphs for both measurements and talked about the relationship between the collected data. Overall, it was a very successful project, great job grade 5's! Next week we will do some math puzzles that start looking at problem solving and math computation skill development.
I have sent home students math work books for you to view. Please initial/sign the last page with math work on it, this should be about 8-10 pages into the book.
In science this week we started exploring wetlands in Alberta. We discussed the growing concern around draining wetlands on farmland and the repercussions this action has on flooding, water management and the preservation of animal habitats/ecosystems. Next week we will be taking a closer look at living and non-living things within a wetland ecosystem.
I have updated the google drive slides for math and science as well as added more place value games to the online math game word document. Place value will be a very important concept for students to understand as we travel into computation and problem-solving.
Humanities
Happy Friday!
This week in Humanities we continued to work on our parts of speech menu and Where I'm From poem. After working on it for about two weeks in class, students are now asked to finish these tasks at home for Monday. No red journal this week because I would like them to focus on the other activities.
On Monday, we will be participating in Orange Shirt day. This day helps support our work towards truth and reconciliation,

September 21st- Weekly Blog
Hi Parents,
It was lovely meeting most of you this week during our learning conferences. Here is a recap on what we did last week, and what to expect in the coming week.
Humanities
This week we have started to work on parts of speech. We have focused on nouns, adjectives, verbs and adverbs.
We have started to read the novel Holes as a class and have had some great discussions surrounding identity.
Math/Science
This week in math we finished up some work with place values and started looking at graphing. Next week we will be exploring graphs and charts further by measuring the shadows cast by the sun during the Equinox. Hopefully we get some sunny days!
In science we finished up our weather visual journal page. Next week we are planning to shift into our Wetlands unit with the hope of exploring some of the wetlands within Tuscany before the weather gets too cold.
Reminders:
Monday October 15th -Fort Calgary field trip. Please let us know if you are able to volunteer for this trip and have your volunteer clearance.
Friday September 28th- Fundraising books due back at the school

September 14th- Weekly Blog
Hi Parents,
We are very excited to be putting out a weekly blog to keep you up to date on all the exciting stuff we
are doing at TMC! This blog will briefly discuss some of the weeks highlights and challenges, where we
are heading in the week to come, and any outstanding announcements.

Math/Science
In science we have been looking at weather, specifically the impact human and human activity has on
weather patterns and changes. Students were asked to create a visual page, using pictures/diagrams
and key words, to demonstrate how human activity impacts weather and climate. We will continue this
work next week.

In math we have been looking at place value. I have challenged students to find real world “big numbers”
(populations, distances, etc.) online and put them into our personalized value charts. We have been
working with getting comfortable with Word, Standard and Expanded forms of numbers and will continue
this work next week.

Humanities
Students should have brought home their red journals today. Please take a few minutes this weekend to
go over the identity question and their answer with them. Sign the page and have them bring it back it
back on Monday.

This week we had great conversations about our identity and especially focused on our name. Next we
will start to look at where we are from.
