Reminder that students still need to return their field trip forms ASAP.
We still need a number of volunteers for our field trip on Tuesday. Please email your homeroom teacher to let them know if you are able to join us for this amazing day. Thank you in advance.

May 24th- Weekly Post
Happy Friday!
Reminders:
-
Field Trip forms for Open Minds must be signed and returned to
school by Monday May 27th for students to attend.
Math/Science:
This week in math students completed their rough drafts of their
Garden blueprints using Volume and Metric Conversion concepts. Students started
selecting and “planting” vegetables within their garden boxes, calculating the
profits they would earn based on the type and amount of each vegetable they
selected. Next week 5-3 will be at Open Minds but 5-4 students will continue
their work on these Garden blueprints. 5-4 students will finalize their garden
boxes and start making a good copy of their Garden blueprint.
In science students finished learning about electromagnetism and
started looking at different types of circuits. In learning about both parallel
and series circuits students will need to determine which type they will use
when installing watering and lighting systems within their Garden project. This
next step will unfold over the coming weeks.

Field Trip Forms
Field trip forms are coming home today for Heritage Park. Both classes will be going on Tuesday, June 4th. Please contact your homeroom teacher if you are able to volunteer for this trip.
Thank you to all of our wonderful volunteers ahead of time :)
Please know that Grade 9 leadership students helped by stapling the forms together and they may be out of order so please make sure to sign and return all the appropriate forms. Payments can be done through your MYCBE account.
The field trip forms say to return by May 22nd please change this date to May 28th 2019.
If you have any questions please feel free to email at clmalinowski@cbe.ab.ca

May 16th- Weekly Post
Happy May Long!
Reminders:
With Open Minds fast approaching (May 27th-31st)
5-3 is still looking for volunteers. In order to go we still need;
-
1 volunteer on Tuesday May 28th
-
2 volunteers on Friday May 31st
Math/Science:
This week in math students applied newly learned concepts of
Volume and Metric Conversion to further develop and detail their Garden
blueprints. Next week students will work with fractions and dollar values to
choose the plants they will include in their garden boxes. Each plant will
provide a different yield so this will be a fun puzzle for the students!
In science students completed two interactive labs that explored magnetism
and electromagnetic forces. Students compared the similarities between
electricity and magnetism and discussed the relationship between them.
Next week students will learn more about the different types of
circuits, parallel and series, to better prepare them for the circuit building
within their Garden project.
Homework: French Booklet and
Graphic Novel (5-3 Students)

UPDATED!! Thursday, May 16th-Celebration of Learning
Thursday, May 16th is our Celebration of Learning.
Between 500-700 pm grade 5 students will have the opportunity to perform their spoken word poems to their family. Students will also be able to show their graphic novels they created during this time.
Please take the time to explore the school and the other projects the older grades have been working on.

Humanities
Students will be bringing home their red journal. The questions this week comes directly from the Alberta Program of Studies. Please read over their response and have a discussion.

Happy Friday!
Reminders:
With Open Minds fast approaching (May 27th-31st)
for 5-3 we are still looking for volunteers. In order to go we still need two volunteers
on both, Tuesday May 28th and Friday May 31st,
please let me know if your able to come with us!
Math/Science:
This week in math students continued working with the concepts of
area and perimeter. On Tuesday, we introduced the Garden project that students
will be completing to explore area, perimeter and volume within a real-world
context. In this project students will be tasked with designing a backyard
blueprint, this blueprint will include spaces for a garden, grass, paths etc.
Students will need to calculate the area and perimeter of each space including
the volume of the “garden” box they want to include. Throughout the project
students will complete additional tasks to improve their math skills, including
determining the “fractions” of their yard that is covered, the “fractions” of
their garden boxes that have different types of vegetables/fruits and the yield
provided from the plants they chose to plant within their garden. Once complete
the individual blueprints students will partner with a classmate to bring their
blueprints to life with a small Garden model. Within this space students will
also insert circuits to provide lighting and watering systems for their
backyards!
This task will blend both Science and Math concepts, acting as a
big part of students learning within the units of Shapes and Space and Electricity.
In science students completed a lab where they built and
replicated circuits with and without switches. Over the coming weeks students
will learn more about the different types of circuits, parallel and series, to
better prepare them for the circuit building within their Garden project.
Homework: Battery Scavenger Hunt
sheet (Due Friday May 10th) – if not complete it is due Monday May
13th.
