May 3rd- Weekly Post

Happy Friday!

Reminders:
Open Minds is only 4 weeks away for 5-3! Please let me know if you are interested in volunteering the week of May 27-31st, we still need volunteers on Tuesday May 28th and Friday May 31st

Math/Science:
This week in math we started our Geometry unit. Students were asked to brainstorm and discuss the concepts of Perimeter, Area and Volume. We learned how to show these concepts using pictures, formulas and definitions. Students then worked in groups to measure and represent the Perimeter, Area and Volume of the classroom. At the end of the week students spent some time working through an online program, Spy Guys, to help them better understand these concepts.

In science, we completed our first online lab using Phet Simulations, where we created and compared a circuit with and without a resistor. Students compared the change in voltage when using a resistor within a circuit, learning how to use a voltammeter and discussing the placement of such a device when measure volts within a circuit. At the end of the week students completed an energy consumption survey and used an online calculator to determine the kWh of some house hold appliances. With this information, some students completed an extension task to determine the amount of CO2 produced when using these appliances for 1 year. Next week we will start building circuits with switches.

Students have a Battery Scavenger Hunt homework task that is due on Friday May 10th.
