Happy Friday!
Reminders:
With Open Minds fast approaching (May 27th-31st)
for 5-3 we are still looking for volunteers. In order to go we still need two volunteers
on both, Tuesday May 28th and Friday May 31st,
please let me know if your able to come with us!
Math/Science:
This week in math students continued working with the concepts of
area and perimeter. On Tuesday, we introduced the Garden project that students
will be completing to explore area, perimeter and volume within a real-world
context. In this project students will be tasked with designing a backyard
blueprint, this blueprint will include spaces for a garden, grass, paths etc.
Students will need to calculate the area and perimeter of each space including
the volume of the “garden” box they want to include. Throughout the project
students will complete additional tasks to improve their math skills, including
determining the “fractions” of their yard that is covered, the “fractions” of
their garden boxes that have different types of vegetables/fruits and the yield
provided from the plants they chose to plant within their garden. Once complete
the individual blueprints students will partner with a classmate to bring their
blueprints to life with a small Garden model. Within this space students will
also insert circuits to provide lighting and watering systems for their
backyards!
This task will blend both Science and Math concepts, acting as a
big part of students learning within the units of Shapes and Space and Electricity.
In science students completed a lab where they built and
replicated circuits with and without switches. Over the coming weeks students
will learn more about the different types of circuits, parallel and series, to
better prepare them for the circuit building within their Garden project.
Homework: Battery Scavenger Hunt
sheet (Due Friday May 10th) – if not complete it is due Monday May
13th.
