April 18th- Weekly Post

Happy Friday!

Reminders:
-       Open Minds is only 6 weeks away for 5-3! Please let me know if you are interested in volunteering the week of May 27-31st, we will need multiple volunteers per day.

Math/Science:
This week in math we continued working on converting decimals to fractions and fractions to decimals. Students were encouraged to use the place value chart to help them understand and work through this conversion process. Students practiced verbally assigning place values (tenth, hundredth and thousandths) to the fractions and decimal number when reading them aloud to help identify how it should be written in a different form. Next week we will wrap up fractions and decimals and move into area and perimeter.

In science students were tasked with identifying electrical hazards and explaining the necessary safety procedures required for each scenario. In moving into Topic B within our electricity unit (Current Electricity) students worked on a visual dictionary page that described and gave examples of electrical conductors, insulators and resistors. Using the online program, Phet Learning Lab, students started making virtual circuits with different conductors, insulators and resistors to compare differences in their circuits performance. We will continue this exploration next week by looking at electrical circuit symbols and key vocabulary before moving into circuit construction.

Have a wonderful long weekend!
