February 28th- Weekly Post

Hi Parents,

Math/Science
This week in math we continued our work with the,  If Canada Were a Village, project. We discussed and worked with data on Canadian Dwellings, specifically the number of renters, owners and band housing residence within Canada. We looked at both a pie and line graph for the information we collected and calculated. Next week we will look at the different age ranges within the Canadian population. Students will use a protractor and calculations to accurately represent this information within a pie graph of their own! Students in 5-4 (Ms. Malinowski's class) will need to ensure their dwellings charts and line graphs are complete by Monday March 11 when they are back from Open Minds (homework support is available in the mornings before they leave on their field trip next week 8-8:30am).

In science this week we talked about mixtures- Homogeneous and Heterogeneous. Students completed an experiment with cabbage water to better understand acids and bases, we will continue our work with this next week. Students in 5-3 (Mrs. Wall's Class) will be completing a science experiment of their choosing next week to show a Physical or Chemical change occurring. We will have lots of class time to work on the write up and organize/practice our experiment so they are ready to present on Friday March 8th. I will be sending students home with the assignment on Monday and it will be posted in google shared. Students may need some materials from home to complete the experiment at school. Students can also choose to complete the experiment at home and take pictures to show or complete at school- either type of demonstration is expectable!

Both classes have started an ongoing task called, "Our Collective Understandings". This task is explained in detail in google shared with students (science folder) "Our Collective Understandings" PowerPoint. We have discussed, at length, students role in adding a picture or artifact to "Our Collective Understanding" PowerPoint in google drive and why it is important for them to show how they have connected the concepts learned in class to their lives. The first artifact or picture is due on Monday March 11th.

Humanities/Field Trip 5-4

Humanities

This week students learned about the Underground Railroad and some of the important people that helped free slaves from the United States. Next week 5-3 will be writing an example of a secret letter that may have been used during the time of the Underground Railroad. 5-4 students will be completing the activity the following week.

Field Trip 5-4

Reminder students from 5-4 will be going to Vivo next week for a week long field trip. We will be participating in a variety of activities that will promote healthy living and making a positive impact on others. Students should be bringing both comfortable indoor and outdoor shoes, a lunch, snack and water. Please ensure that they leave all their valuables at home or at school, they will have no need for a phone or money. If you have any questions regarding the field trip please send me an email and I will try and answer your question.

Hope everyone has a great weekend.

February 22nd- Weekly Post

Hi Parents,

Math/Science
In math we started our fractions and decimals project based off the book- If the World Were a Village. This week we used the Canadian 2016 census to compare provincial and territory population data to data from the 1991 census. Using this data we found the total number, decimal, percentage and fraction of people within each province and territory on a scale of 100. In the weeks to come we will continue to work with the concept of, Canada as a Village of 100 people, adding charts and graphs of the data we collect to make our own books. We will look at data such as, Age, Education, Language and Dwellings that exist within our country to better understand these concepts and learn about our fellow Canadians.

In science we continued our chemistry unit by completing two more experiments, an exothermic chemical reaction (yeast and hydrogen peroxide) and a mixtures experiment where we grew crystals using Borax. I have updated the PowerPoint in the google drive shared with students science folder, I would encourage students to review the science vocabulary on these slides if they missed any class time this week. Next week we will look more closely at mixtures, the different types of mixtures and ways to separate mixtures using magnetism, vaporization, etc.

Have a great weekend!

Friday Humanities

Reminder that this activity will be happening on Monday. This activity is not meant to cause stress to families but be a fun way to wrap up our fur trade discussion. Students will be asked to reflect on how they worked as a group and how it was to plan an outside of school activity. I will be looking at their reflection pieces following the activity and how they were able to represent their learning using a different medium. If you do not want your child to eat any of the food please email me to let me know or else have them tell me on that day. Thank you for your support in this activity.

Fur Trade Cafe
-In groups of 3-4, you will create a menu item for our Fur Trade Cafe. You will pick one of the groups (Métis, voyageur/coureur des bois, habitant/seigneur, HBC, NWC) and will create a dish that reflects that group. This should be a dish that does not require heating or refrigeration.
-Examples from past years have included: puffed wheat beaver furs, kitkat HBC trading post, blue jello river with voyageurs, and habitant farmland cake.-You must work TOGETHER and find time to meet outside of school
to complete this project.
-Please include your recipe and ingredients
-You should share the cost and the workload. Use the planning sheet to organize each person’s jobs.

This week we discussed the United Empire Loyalists and the impact that the War of Independence had on our population and land. Next week, we will start talking about the Underground Railroad.
Students planned and wrote a narrative of their choice. We will continue to look at this piece of writing next week and edit their work.

February 13th - Weekly Post

Hi Parents,

Math/Science:
In math this week students learned short division, most students liked this method, other found long division to be a better fit. We finished up our work with division by completing more word problems using division concepts, gaining confidence in applying division calculations within context to solve real world problems. Next week we will start our decimals and fractions unit. This unit will be centered around a project where students will use information provided from the 2016 Canadian census to create charts and graphs. The focus of this project will be to represent the different languages, ages, populations etc. within Canada on a scale of 100, exploring the idea of Canada as a village of 100 people. This project will be very guided and gradually become more student directed as students gain confidence in converting numbers to decimal and fraction form.

In science this week we continued our Chemistry unit by completing two science experiments, one on gases and the other on states of matter. Students explored the concepts of density within gases and viscosity of non-Newtonian fluids. Next week we will continue working on our lab write ups and discuss the different variables within each experiment. Students will explore mixtures and the pH scale (acids and bases) within the labs to come.

Homework 5-3
Our French calendars and weather averages project will be due on Tuesday February 19th. Homework support will be provided on Tuesday morning from 8-8:30am in room 107.

Have an amazing family day weekend!

February 8th- Weekly Post

Hi Parents,

Reminders;
- Please return signed report card envelopes to school
- Please review and sign the science test

Math/Science:
This week in math we worked on multi-step word problems using both division and multiplication concepts. We focused on reading problems carefully to determine what type of operation we need to use to solve the different questions being asked. At the end of the week we talked about dividing without remainders (using decimals). Students practiced this using long division. Next week we will work with the divisibility rules and play some activities to better understand them. We will officially be moving into our decimals and fractions unit on February 19th.

This week in science students completed their Weather and Wetlands unit test. It was an open book test and the average was 81% across both classes. Well done grade 5's! At the end of the week we kicked off our Chemistry unit by discussing the different states of matter. Next week we will complete our first lab report and experiment on the differences between gases.

Have a great weekend!
