Hi Parents,
Math/Science
This week in math we continued our work with the, If Canada Were a Village, project. We discussed and worked with data on Canadian Dwellings, specifically the number of renters, owners and band housing residence within Canada. We looked at both a pie and line graph for the information we collected and calculated. Next week we will look at the different age ranges within the Canadian population. Students will use a protractor and calculations to accurately represent this information within a pie graph of their own! Students in 5-4 (Ms. Malinowski's class) will need to ensure their dwellings charts and line graphs are complete by Monday March 11 when they are back from Open Minds (homework support is available in the mornings before they leave on their field trip next week 8-8:30am).
In science this week we talked about mixtures- Homogeneous and Heterogeneous. Students completed an experiment with cabbage water to better understand acids and bases, we will continue our work with this next week. Students in 5-3 (Mrs. Wall's Class) will be completing a science experiment of their choosing next week to show a Physical or Chemical change occurring. We will have lots of class time to work on the write up and organize/practice our experiment so they are ready to present on Friday March 8th. I will be sending students home with the assignment on Monday and it will be posted in google shared. Students may need some materials from home to complete the experiment at school. Students can also choose to complete the experiment at home and take pictures to show or complete at school- either type of demonstration is expectable!
Both classes have started an ongoing task called, "Our Collective Understandings". This task is explained in detail in google shared with students (science folder) "Our Collective Understandings" PowerPoint. We have discussed, at length, students role in adding a picture or artifact to "Our Collective Understanding" PowerPoint in google drive and why it is important for them to show how they have connected the concepts learned in class to their lives. The first artifact or picture is due on Monday March 11th.
