December 21st- Weekly Blog

Happy Holidays!

Reminders:
- Monday January 7, 2019 is a Professional Development day so students will not have school, classes will resume on Tuesday January 8, 2019.

Math/Science:
In math this week we completed our multiplication unit with a summative assessment (Test) on Tuesday. Students did very well in both classes with an average of just over 80% for both groups of students. The test included 4 computation questions, 6 multiple choice, 2 word problems, and 1 bonus question.  I gave lots of part marks, considering both the accuracy of answers as well as the proper completion of the multiple steps required.  Students received their marks on Wednesday (they are also posted on Power School) and we went over the test together. We focused our discussion around the estimation multiple choice questions, these were the hardest part of the test for most students.

In science we continued our work with weather, looking at atmospheric pressure, weather fronts, wind and clouds. Students worked in groups to research and discuss how these elements of weather play a role in forecasting and communicating weather patterns. If not completed, students were asked to bring their weather research booklets home to work on over the holidays. Students need to finish the first three pages and can use the following online link, https://www.weatherwizkids.com/ to fill out jot notes for each question. Students have been shown this and know where to go!

Have a wonderful holiday everyone!

Happy Friday

Humanities

As we near to the end of our year we are finishing up a few of our bigger tasks. On Monday, students will be presenting to their groups the research and work they completed on their region.

On Thursday, December 20th students will be taking a quiz in Humanities on the Canadian regions. They have a small book we completed at the beginning of the unit that is full of all the information they need to know. If they cannot find their book, they are able to take notes on Monday during their classmates presentations. I will also be doing a review on all the regions on Tuesday to help answer any last minute questions they may have. If students miss the quiz we will find another time for them to complete it.

Have a great weekend!

Happy Friday!

Reminders:
- Last week to bring in socks, tooth paste or tooth brushes!
- Monday December 17th is Pajama and Hot Chocolate Day, remember to bring a mug for a cup of free hot chocolate! :)

Math/Science:
In math this week we finished up our multiplication unit. Students completed word problems using both Lattice and Traditional multiplication strategies and played mental math review games. On Thursday we reviewed the printed unit review sheet for the multiplication unit test next week. Students have been asked to take this sheet home, along with their books, to study over the weekend. I would encourage students to review the study sheet and make sure they understand the concepts on it. There are practice games and worksheet links on google docs if students would like additional practice.

In science we have started our Meteorologist For a Day project, students have been given a guided research manual to begin their work. This project is very large and has been broken into pieces, before the holidays we hope to get the majority of the research done so we can start the infographics and presentations in January.

Have a wonderful weekend :)

Hi Parents,

Reminders:
- Student Led Learning Conferences next week, Wednesday December 5th and Thursday December 6th.
- Students will have early dismissal Wednesday (12:40pm) and no school Thursday or Friday next week.

Math/Science:
In math this week students completed a Partial Product multiplication check in slip, these went home for a signature and needs to be returned to school. Following our Partial Product work we introduced the final method of multiplication we will work with this year, the Lattice Method. Most students were very excited about this method as it was the first time many of them had seen it. We will continue to work with the Lattice Method in the coming week as we prepare to show you all of the neat ways we have learned to multiply during our Learning Conferences. Updated information about the Lattice Method has been added to the google slide shared with students, it includes steps and examples if you are interested in reviewing it.

In science this week we finished our Wetland Poster Project and have started our summative write-ups on the work we completed during this task. Next week we will continue to work on our write-ups and start looking at clouds, wind and meteorology within our Weather unit.

French 5-3:
Please finish the Ages and Names of the family members you included on your French Family Trees, your red books have all the resources you will need for this. Students will have a final period to fine-line and colour their family trees on Monday.

November 23rd- Weekly Blog

Hi Parents,

Reminders:
- We will be hosting weekly, Monday morning, homework support from 8:00-8:30am for student's who would like to finish up homework that is due.
- I would encourage students to continue working on their basic fact knowledge of multiplication, up to 9x9, outside of school. Resources (games and worksheets) are available on google docs (shared with students) through the provided links, but flash cards and a multiplication chart work as well.

Math/Science:
This week in Math we continued our work with multiplication, building basic facts through mental math and estimation games. Students completed the games, Beetle Blitz and The Greatest Product, to improve their skills within these stems of mathematics. During this time students were asked to verbally communicate their mathematic process to better understand and represent the importance of place value, doubling and halving when completing multiplication tasks. Next week students will complete a check-in slip on Partial Product multiplication and work on completing 2-digit by 2-digit multiplication word problems.

In Science we have started our 2-D Wetland Poster Project. Students have taken on the role of a "man-made wetland designer" to create one of the four types of wetland ecosystems common to Alberta. Students are working in teams of 4-5 students to complete research and then the construction of their wetland. We will  be showcasing these posters during the Learning Conference in December and are very excited for you to see them!

Have a wonderful weekend!

November 16th- Weekly Blog

Happy Friday,

Reminders:
- Learning Conferences are on December 5th and 6th, bookings will open shortly
- Field Trip to Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra Wednesday November 21st

Math/Science:
In math this week we put our multiplication skills to the test with some word problem practice. Students worked on identifying key information, determining operations needed and implementing a "mental math" strategy to aid their process. We looked at using the following strategies to help us with those tough numbers 6,7,8's- Annexing the Zero, Rounding, Distributive Property, Compensation and Compatible Numbers. These strategies helped students find entry points into tough multiplication facts, while building their basic fact knowledge.

In science this week we had an amazing field trip to Inglewood Bird Sanctuary on Thursday. During this trip we learned about the water cycle, weather phenomena, weather tracking, wildlife and wetland ecosystems.

Next week in science we will be starting a group project where students will build a man-made wetland in a 3-D poster format. This should be a very fun project where students will get to show their understanding in a very visual way!

Homework:
Students water cycle pamphlet is due on Monday November 19th. This should only take 20 minutes as most students are done. I will be in my class at 8:00am on Monday if students need to use that time to finish their cycles.

Have a great weekend!

Field Trip- Inglewood Bird Sanctuary

Hello Lovely Parents,

We are still looking to fill two-three volunteer spots for our field trip to the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary on Thursday November 15th, please email Mrs. Wall or Ms. Malinowski if you are interested!

Also, please ensure everyone who is attending the field trip is dressed warmly. The forecast is calling for snow and rain, with a high of 6. We will be outside for a good portion of the trip so water proof boots, mitts, hats and jackets are essential!

Thanks,
Mrs. Wall and Ms. Malinowski

Read Aloud-Holes

Following our read aloud of the novel Holes we will be watching the movie on Friday, November 16th. We will be comparing the film and novel to discuss the similarities and differences they see in both medias. If you wish your child not to watch this video please email me at clmalinowski@cbe.ab.ca and I will have another activity planned for them during those periods.

Thank you :)

November 9th- Weekly Blog

Hi Parents,

Reminders:

  • We are still looking for volunteers for our Inglewood Bird Sanctuary field trip on Thursday November 15th, please email Mrs. Wall or Ms. Malinowski if you are interested.
  • We have enough volunteers for the CPO on Wednesday November 21st, thank you!
  • Please return signed field trip forms as soon as possible

Math/Science:
In math this week we continued our work with array multiplication and started looking at partial product multiplication. Students seem to like the partial product strategy better, as it breaks up the 2-digit numbers into their place values, allowing for easier multiplication questions with an addition component. I have added information about partial product multiplication to the "shared with students" math google doc if you are interested. In science this week we looked at how weather and wetlands connect through the water cycle. We will continue tracking and recording weather next week as we prepare for our field trip, which will be weather focused, on Thursday.

Happy Friday!

November 2nd- Weekly Blog

Hi Parents,

Just one note;

  • We are looking for volunteers for our field trip to the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary on Thursday November 15th, please email Mrs. Wall or Ms. Malinowski if you are interested!
In math this week we continued our work with Array Multiplication, using both base ten blocks and graph paper to create our arrays. Students challenged themselves by making arrays that were 2 digit by 2 digit and we discussed the possibility of creating arrays that were even larger (3 digit by 3 digit), great work kiddos! Next week we will finish up array's and move into Partial Product Multiplication.

In science this week we finished our in-class work on our Environmental Call to Action research and letter project. Students who did not finish their letters have brought these home to finish over the weekend, they are due on Monday November 5th (task outline, rubric, and letter template are all available on google docs). Next week we will start looking at the water cycle, both in terms of wetland ecosystems and weather! This should be a fun task that will connect both of the science units we are currently working through.

Have a great weekend!

October 12th- Weekly Post

Happy Friday!

Field Trip
Reminder we are going to Fort Calgary on Monday. Please ensure that students are on time Monday morning. The bus will be leaving around 8:45am.

Please remember to bring the following items:
-Lunch
-Water bottle
-Snack
-Proper footwear

At this moment the weather looks beautiful for Monday however living in Calgary we know that can change quickly. Please make sure to take a look at the forecast in the morning and to pack any weather appropriate items that may be needed.

Thank you to our volunteers for Monday. If you are volunteering please arrive around 8:35am to sign any papers and receive any updated information.  If parents would like to drive that would be helpful as the bus can get a little tight, parking onsite at Fort Calgary will be $6 for 7 hours. If you were unable to volunteer for this particular trip, do not worry we have one coming up in November.

Humanities
Red Journal- The question this week is “ In your opinion which are the two most important Canadian symbols? Why?”  We discussed how they should be including enough details to try and persuade the reader to agree with their opinion.

Science/Math
This week in math we continued our work on our Nerds problem- Could you eat 1 million nerds? This was very fun and we found that 1 million nerds would be a total of 1,112 packages of nerds, weighing in at 52Kg of nerds!!!

This week in science we looked at the different living and non-living things within a wetland ecosystem. We talked about producers, consumers and decomposers within these ecosystems and started placing them within an Energy Pyramid. Next week we will continue this exploration!

Have a great weekend!

October 5th- Weekly Blog

Happy Friday!

RemindersField Trip forms are due on October 9th 2018.  We are still looking for a few volunteers for this field trip. If you have a volunteer clearance and are able to attend please let your child’s homeroom teacher know as soon as possible.

Humanities In class this week we started to discuss Canadian identity and how we would define it. From the list the students generate they wrote an Ode to that item. Ask your child, what they decided to write about.  If students were not done their rough copy they brought it home to complete over the weekend. The good copy will be completed in class.

Red Journals The students were asked: “What is your opinion of Holes? Provide 3 reasons to defend your opinion.” The purpose of the red journal is for you to see what we have been doing in class and to see the connections your child is making to the work. It is a great way to start a conversation about their knowledge and understanding in Humanities.  I appreciate the signatures so that I can see that you are seeing the work they are producing.

Health 5-4 We have been talking about healthy eating and having a balance diet. The students in 5-4 were asked to keep a record of the food they ate on one of the days this weekend.  They were also asked to include any physical activity they may have done on that day. Please bring it to class on Tuesday.

Math/Science: In math this week we looked at a Terry Fox word problem- this was a little more challenging but we used the 4 step problem solving model to help us and went through it as a whole class after working on it independently. During the later part of the week we starting talking about what 1 million looks like. The students were challenged to consider if they could eat a million of something, and if yes, what it would be. Students came up with some very inventive ideas- grains of rice, grains of sugar, etc. We decided to investigate eating 1 million nerd candies and proceeded to count out the amount of nerds in a single 47g container. Students showed lots of different strategies for counting- grouping, skip counting, etc. Next week we will take our data, number of actual nerd candies in each package, find the average and determine how many nerd packages would be needed to get 1 million. It was a very fun week and students did very well at controlling their desire to eat all the nerds!
In science we continued our exploration of the different types of wetlands found in Alberta. We looked to define, describe and draw pictures of each type to better understand how they differ from one another. Next week we will look more closely at the life cycle of plants and animals.

Have a great long weekend and see you Tuesday, October 9th 2018.

September 28th- Weekly Blog

Hi Parents,

We hope everyone is having a great week; here are some weekly TMC reminders;
- Return fundraising books/packages by Monday October 1st
- Field Trip to Fort Calgary (October 15th)- still looking for volunteers

Math/Science:

During math this week we focused on data collection and graphing. On Tuesday we went outside every hour and measured the shadow lengths and sun height in the sky. Throughout the remainder of the week we compiled the collected data and calculated the mean, median and mode. This was a little challenging as it was our first time calculating data and these concepts are bridging on grade 6 math, but the students all tried hard to understand and participate. Students had the choice to work through these calculations in a small student lead group or in the larger teacher lead group. Yesterday we made our graphs for both measurements and talked about the relationship between the collected data. Overall, it was a very successful project, great job grade 5's! Next week we will do some math puzzles that start looking at problem solving and math computation skill development.

I have sent home students math work books for you to view. Please initial/sign the last page with math work on it, this should be about 8-10 pages into the book.

In science this week we started exploring wetlands in Alberta. We discussed the growing concern around draining wetlands on farmland and the repercussions this action has on flooding, water management and the preservation of animal habitats/ecosystems. Next week we will be taking a closer look at living and non-living things within a wetland ecosystem.

I have updated the google drive slides for math and science as well as added more place value games to the online math game word document. Place value will be a very important concept for students to understand as we travel into computation and problem-solving.

Humanities

Happy Friday!

This week in Humanities we continued to work on our parts of speech menu and Where I'm From poem. After working on it for about two weeks in class, students are now asked to finish these tasks at home for Monday. No red journal this week because I would like them to focus on the other activities.

On Monday, we will be participating in Orange Shirt day. This day helps support our work towards truth and reconciliation,

September 14th- Weekly Blog

Hi Parents,

We are very excited to be putting out a weekly blog to keep you up to date on all the exciting stuff we
are doing at TMC! This blog will briefly discuss some of the weeks highlights and challenges, where we
are heading in the week to come, and any outstanding announcements.

Math/Science
In science we have been looking at weather, specifically the impact human and human activity has on
weather patterns and changes. Students were asked to create a visual page, using pictures/diagrams
and key words, to demonstrate how human activity impacts weather and climate. We will continue this
work next week.

In math we have been looking at place value. I have challenged students to find real world “big numbers”
(populations, distances, etc.) online and put them into our personalized value charts. We have been
working with getting comfortable with Word, Standard and Expanded forms of numbers and will continue
this work next week.

Humanities
Students should have brought home their red journals today. Please take a few minutes this weekend to
go over the identity question and their answer with them. Sign the page and have them bring it back it
back on Monday.

This week we had great conversations about our identity and especially focused on our name. Next we
will start to look at where we are from.

Reminders
Tuesday September 18th is picture day.
Thursday September 20th will be a half day and no school Friday because of Parent Teacher Interviews.
